HP Pivot: Sept. 2011 featured app: Death By Caffeine

September 1st, 2011 / No Comments » / by ArunSenior04

So as some of you may know, Death By Caffeine HD is a featured app in the September 2011 edition of HP Pivot, a digital app catalog magazine for the HP Touchpad. As a developer, this is one of the coolest experiences I think I have ever had.  What makes this even better, is that this is the second time I’ve had an app spotlighted by H/Palm; the first being Death By Caffeine for webOS phones. Given HP’s plan to discontinue webOS hardware operations, I wasn’t sure if this was going to make it into the magazine at all (so you can imagine my excitement seeing it spotlighted.)

In regards to the app, there is an update for the tablet version coming. Currently, the “Kilograms” option is not working as it should (local cookie issue.) Until the new version has been reviewed and released by Palm’s QA team, choosing the “Pounds” option should allow you to proceed as a work-around for the time being. Given the typical review period, this update should be posting to the official catalog within the next few business days. I apologize to all my metric-scale-utilizing users for not catching this much sooner.

As always, if you have any comments or suggestions, please let me know. I would definitely like to thank Palm and the HP Pivot team for shining light on small-time developers like myself.  I also want to extend a special thanks to Michael Marsicano, the artist behind the illustration. It’s things like this that make developing for webOS such a welcoming experience.

Thanks.

  • Fix for “Kilograms” weight unit bug. Choosing “Kilograms” will not work properly at the moment; “Pounds” works fine.

This upcoming update has been uploaded for review by Palm, so it should be posting in the next week. Thanks to everyone that sent me this bug. I believe it has been in the app for a while, but I haven’t been able to duplicate it until recently.  As always, if you have any comments or suggestions, please let me know.

Death By Caffeine…Tablet Edition

July 1st, 2011 / No Comments » / by ArunSenior04

So, as many of you know…the HP Touchpad was released today. For those of you lucky to pick one of these up, I want to let you know that Death By Caffeine has been completely re-written for the tablet, and the new Enyo framework. Also, it is available…..NOW.

This new version (1.0.2) extends many of the common features found in the phone/Mojo version. It works by allowing a user to enter in their weight, choose a poison/beverage, and calculate the amount of servings needed to succumb to an overdose of caffeine. Unique to the tablet, is a “sliding view” that allows a user to look-up various information and pictures (across the web) of their selected beverage. The tablet version also will now allow you to post your results to Facebook (in addition to email, messaging, and Twitter.)

Due to the new webOS framework, the tablet version of Death By Caffeine is a complete rewrite. It leverages many UI features that would be difficult, or even unintuitive, on a phone. The additional screen real estate required a different mindset when it came to the overall design.

This is my first tablet app, but probably not my last. I still have a few more ideas on items I would like to add to both apps (phone and tablet.) If you have any comments or suggestions, please let me know.

Thanks.
